Technique:
Ink and wash painting, in Chinese shuǐ-mò ("water and ink") also loosely termed watercolor or brush painting, and also known as "literati painting", as it was one of the "four arts" of the Chinese Scholar-official class. Ink wash painting is usually done on rice paper which are highly absorbent and unsized. Silk is also used in some forms of ink painting. The most highly prized paper for producing Chinese Calligraphy and Painting is known as Xuan Paper (宣紙). Many types of Xuan paper and washi do not lend themselves readily to a smooth wash the way watercolor paper does.
